Lesson Log3/18-27/2020-We will be using canvas.
TERM 4 3/13/2020-Today we checked out copies of "The Great Gatsby" and a book of your choice for the QBP#4 (April 23). HAve a good weekend:) 3/11/2020-Today, we started class by writing on whether violence is ever acceptable. After discussing this, we looked at rhetoric again. We then read an essay or an interview by MLK or Malcolm X and looked for the thesis, claims (identifying the appeal) and wrote a second paragraph on the effectiveness of the argument (MLK or Malcolm X's arguments). 3/6/2020-Today we wrote our QBP #3. It needs to be a minimum of five paragraphs in length. The prompt is as follows: Explore how "power" (authority, rights, privileges, lack, etc.) is explored within your text and compare it with its use in a text we have read in class. Who holds the most power? What significance might that have on the overall meaning in the stories? Are the authors being critical of (are they challenging) society? Yes or no, how so? 3/4/2020-We worked on rhetoric today. We analyzed a Rembrandt painting, took notes and then wrote two paragraphs which compare/contrast the song "Zombie" by The Cranberries and the cover of the same song by Bad Wolves. 3/3/2020-We finished reading Tuesdays. 2/28/2020-We continued our reading of Tuesdays. 2/26/2020-Same as last class. We watched presentations and continued reading. If you haven't presented yet, you need to set a time up with me. 2/24/2020-We watched some of the presentations for our Morrie projects. We continued our reading of the text. 2/20/2020-We filled out ACT forms and continued with Tuesdays with Morrie. Some people presented. 2/18/2020-Today we started with a survey on our perceptions on education. We then read pages 90-108 in Tuesdays With Morrie and worked on a few questions in groups. We then continued our work on our presentations (due next class). Those who finished early had time to work on finishing their book for the QBP#3. 2/13/2020-Today we started with a self-reflection (if you missed, please come see me to get the prompt, which needs to be finished). We continued our reading and discussion of "Tuesdays with Morrie" and discussed the interview and presentation project a bit more. 2/11/2020- Today we discussed life and continued our reading of Tuesdays with Morrie. Please remember to get your interview done. 2/7/2020-We continued with "Tuesdays With Morrie" after writing about inspiration. We worked on interview questions to ask our "Morrie" 2/5/2020-We read and watched "Tuesdays with Morrie" 2/3/2020-Snow day 1/30/2020-We watched "Every Brilliant Thing" in the little theater. 1/28/2020-We worked on Tuesday's With Morrie and finishing up our short stories. Due to technology issues the due date is extended to next class. 1/24/2020-We continued our short story. It will be due next class 1/22/2020-We discussed writing short stories and figurative devices. Students started writing a short story (2-5 pages double-spaced, incorporating 5 different figurative devices, clear setting and characterization). 1/17/2020-We took a pre-assessment on figurative devices and then collaboratively corrected them (we took notes on the devices and were introduced to literarydevices.net--a website with definitions and examples of numerous literary devices). We started discussing a creative short story that will incorporate at least 5 figurative devices in a story that will be 2-5 pages in length. 1/14-15/2020-Students spent time with the counselors to prepare for their future. 1/13/2020-We finished going over the stories and did a self-assessment of our collaborations from last time. 1/9/2020-Students finished reading and collaborating on the two short stories from last time. We started unpacking the stories as a class. 1/7/2020-Today we discussed the elements of effective collaboration and looked at the rubric for collaboration. We read "Miss Temptation" as a class and applied a few questions to it. Individually, students were asked to read "The Public Hating." Next time, classes will be broken into smaller collaborative groups to work together on analyzing the two short stories. TERM 3 12/16/2019-We finished watching the film, and discussed it. 12/12/2019-Today we worked on the QBP2-on mindset. If you missed, come see me for the prompt. 12/10/2019-We finished Act 3 by having a discussion about the climax of the play and possible changes for it. 12/6/2019-We discussed questions surrounding "The Crucible" and its application to today. 12/4/2019-We finished reading Act 3 of "The Crucible." Next time we will be looking at the climax of the play. 12/2/2019-Students wrote a 3 paragraph essay on the role that honesty and deception play in developing meaning in the story. We started reading Act 3. 11/25/2019-We watched Act 2 and 3. Have a fun and safe holiday weekend! 11/21/2019-We finished reading Act 2 and looked at the structure of the act--how it develops meaning for the play and the reader. 11/19/2019-We finished watching Act 1 and discussed how to start a movement. We then started to read Act 2. 11/15/2019-We finished our protagonist and inciting incident prompts. We started watching ACT 1. 11/13/2019-We continued reading Act 1. 11/11/2019-We read from Act 1 of "The Crucible" after talking about plot and character types. 11/7/2019-We learned about the history and context of Puritanism as well as witches and "The Crucible." 11/5/2019-We took notes on a few more figurative devices. After, we looked at soldier and scout mindset. 11/1/2019-We unpacked "Young Goodman Brown" and discussed the literary terms foreshadowing, characterization, climax, allusion, irony, and inference/implication. 10/30/2019-Today we turned in our "spooky" stories and read "Young Goodman Brown." We looked at how figurative devices are used in writing. 10/28/2019-Today we reviewed figurative terms (Implied Metaphor, hyperbole, understatement/meiosis, onomatopoeia, and alliteration/sibilance). Students were then tasked with writing a "spooky" short story. 10/24/2019- Today we reviewed argumentative writing and discussed the difference between guilt and innocence. 10/22/2019- We reviewed Of Mice and Men and wrote our theme essay on it. TERM 2 10/15/2019-Today we checked out our book for our second quarterly book project. Please have your book read by Dec. 12th. We also were given a day to catch up on missing work or earn extra-credit for next term. 10/11/2019-Today, after the assembly, we worked on our quarterly book project 1 (QBP 1). Students were asked to identify a theme or element from their text and compare it to a theme we discussed in class. To help out, I am also permitting the comparison of a theme from last-years class texts. Next time we will be writing our Of Mice and Men essay based on your annotations of the text. 10/09/2019-We finished reading Of Mice and Men. Next class we will be doing our quarterly book project. Bring your book and notes. 10/07/2019-We continued reading chapter 4 in Of Mice and Men and worked on our annotations. 10/03/2019-Students wrote an essay exploring the meaning of the short story "The Life You Save May Be Your Own." Following this, Students read the remainder of Chapter 4 in Of Mice and Men. 10/1/2019-We read through chapter 3 and a bit of chapter 4. Students wrote a paragraph exploring how a character was silenced, and what that silencing means. "Choose a character who has been silenced in some way. Why and how were they silenced? What impact on the overall meaning of the text is created by their silencing?" 9/27/2019-Today we read and discussed Chapter 3 up to page 51 in Of Mice and Men. We also worked on our annotations. 9/25/2019-We finished reading chapter 2 and uncovering symbolism thus far. We also explore the word "Poverty" in great detail in order to understand how a single concept can have depth beyond our initial thoughts. 9/23/2019-Students worked in groups to uncover symbolism within the Of Mice and Men. After discussing these symbols, we worked on uncovering more of chapter 2 and briefly discussed silence. 9/19/19-Today we reviewed academic language and structure, and active voice. We responded to two Hemingway quotes in a synthesis paragraph, and peer reviewed them. WE finished chapter one of Of Mice and Men. RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING QUOTES IN AN ACADEMIC PARAGRAPH. REMEMBER TO USE FORMAL DICTION WITH ACTIVE VOICE. “HAPPINESS IN INTELLIGENT PEOPLE IS THE RAREST THING I KNOW.” “EVERY MAN'S LIFE ENDS THE SAME WAY. IT IS ONLY THE DETAILS OF HOW HE LIVED AND HOW HE DIED THAT DISTINGUISH ONE MAN FROM ANOTHER.” 9/17/2019-Today we went over the first 13 pages of Of Mice and Men while making connections to Robert Burns' poem "To A Mouse." We also touched on Active Voice. As we read we annotated based on the different topics. 9/13/2019-We finished our concrete detail/commentary chunks based on "Hills Like White Elephants." 9/11/2019-We finished our notes on American modernism. We turned in our best two thesis statements from "The Masque of the Red Death. We read and discussed, in part, Hemingway's "Old Man and the Sea" and we will finish with this story by writing a couple of concrete detail/commentary chunks. 9/9/2019-We worked on Thesis exercise. If you were not here, you need to write 5 thesis statements and choose your best two to revise and improve. We also took notes on American Modernism--we will finish this next class. 9/5/2019-WE finished unpacking the "Masque..." and started a thesis exercise. We also got notes on thesis statements and looked at the Purdue OWL. We practiced understanding subtext by looking at a letter entitled "Secret Reich Business." 9/3/2019-Today we finished our revisions of the "Paths of Hate" analysis. If you have not completed and turned your copy in, please finish for next time. After revisions we took notes on the iceberg principle. Get notes from a neighbor. We finished by reading "Masque of the Red Death" by Edgar Allen Poe. We started to unpack the deeper meaning of it, and will continue next class. 8/29/2019-Today we uncovered the rubrics for argumentative writing. We used our understanding to peer assess the "Paths of Hate" analyses that we completed last time. After the peer assessment and a self-assessment, we started on the revision process. There will be time on Tuesday to finish this revision. 8/27/2019-We finished discussing the disclosure document. If you have any questions, please ask. We watched "Paths of Hate" and students had 30 minutes to write an analysis essay on it. We went over analysis as a class, and will review the essays next time. 8/23/2019-Class finished the discussion on being nice and we read the Harvard Business Review article "Candor, Criticism, and Teamwork" discussing its merits and how to create a positive learning environment (culture) in our class. We received the course disclosure as well. 8/21/2019-We started class with a review of academic language. We also answered and discussed the questions: "What does it mean to be nice? or What are the disadvantages of being nice?" |
